I’m pleased to announce my ‘Taste of South Africa’ menu. I’ve provided a few comments & explanations below in italics to help describe what’s on offer. I hope you like what you see!
Sandwiches
Smoked mackeral paté
(Smoked snoek would be the true South African equivalent but unfortunately is not available here so mackeral is the closest equivalent!)
Cheese & my homemade chutney
(I grew up with the institution of Mrs H S Balls chutney … I’ve occasionally seen it here in Sainsbury’s! .. but mine’s just as good)
Carrot & homemade hummus
Savouries
My Mum’s cheese & onion biscuits
Butternut falafel
(Whilst falafel is Middle Eastern butternut is a staple of the South African cuisine)
Cakes & scones
‘Melk tert’
(‘Milk Tart’ … closest British equivalent is a custard tart)
Koeksisters
(Syrup-coated doughnut in a twisted or braided shape )
Crunchies
(You’ll love these … an oat based biscuit)
Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting
(Whilst not purporting to originate from the southern hemisphere, it’s on the menu of every self-respecting South African tea room)
Buttermilk scones with jam & clotted cream
Teas
Rooibos
(herbal South African tea)
Early grey
English breakfast
Selection of fruit teas
Caffetière Coffees
Decaffeinated
Roasted ground blend
Suggested donation £13
Sorry I didn’t reply to your mail yesterday – your menu looked divine yesterday and it looks even better today. Sitting in freezing cold Pietermaritzburg, with Nottingham Road (about 40 kms from here) snowed in, its raining, the winds blowing and my first through was “A hot cup of tea, those eats and the gas heater”! DIVINE!!
